For the first time, the Maine Games is presenting an award to the Maine Games athlete who has demonstrated uncommon courage and determination in their pursuit of athletic participant and accomplishment.
Travis Roy, a former Boston University hockey player, crashed into the boards just 11 seconds into his first college hockey game and was left a quadaplegic. In time, through grit and determination, Travis has dealt with his tragic injury to become a fearless advocate, a dynamic and inspirational speaker, and a role model for anyone who has to overcome adversity.
The Maine Games is honored to award the first Travis Roy Courage Award to a young athlete with a lifetime of participation ahead, who embraces the challenges of everyday life through athletics.

Lighten ME! is Maine's statewide team weight loss and get fit competition. This year's teams have worked extremely hard to lose weight, get more active, and become healthier, and more productive at work and at home.
This year's top teams have been invited to recevie their awards at the Maine Games Opening Ceremonies.
While many Lighten ME! participants have lost considerable amounts of weight, and have logged hundreds of miles of exercise between January 22 and May 2, the reward of Maine Games gold, silver, or bronze medals pales by comparison with the better health the have achieved with their teammates.
